Anonymous Ensemble
Eamonn is the Artistic Director of Anonymous Ensemble. In general, Eamonn writes and directs the ensemble’s shows, although the original impetus for any particular project often times comes from other members. Jessica Weinstein and Liz Davito are core ensemble members and have been primary collaborators in almost all of the company’s body of work. Similar to Mabou Mines, the composition of the ensemble is assembled on a project to project basis. As per our Ensemble’s name, we often produce anonymously and prefer to brand our work specifically to the project i.e. TheBest, Tall Hilda, The Emperors etc.
Anonymous Ensemble makes audience-focused, spectacle-based work and is best known as creators of “TheBest,” a long-form, multimedia, rock theater extravaganza in multiple episodes/mediums and based on the ancient Greek Theban plays. Over a period of five years, we presented installments of “TheBest” all over NYC including The Chocolate Factory, The Ice Factory Festival, the Above Ground Zero Festival, OfficeOps, Galapagos and a lot of rock venues. In 2006, two episodes of “TheBest” were also presented in the Brisbane International Festival in Australia and an interactive video installation was presented in the Neuropolis Festival in Berlin.
Since our Best days, we’ve created our interactive, narrative dance party, “Wanderlust” which premiered in the Ice Factory Festival ’07 and was nominated for a Total Theatre Award in Experiment and Innovation at the Edinburgh Fringe ’08. “Wanderlust” then booked a UK tour including the Latitude Festival and a London premiere at Jackson’s Lane. AnEn’s “a Wonderland” premiered in the Ice Factory ’09 Festival and was AnEn’s first collaboration with Athens-based composer, William Antoniou. “Troop Troupe” was developed through a Mabou Mines Residency and premiered as part of La MaMa’s Fall ’09 Season.
In the spring of 2010, Liz, Jessica and Eamonn joined Antoniou in Greece to develop a new, bi-lingual, Rebetiko “live rockumentary” called The Return. The following spring, they returned to Athens to finish and premiere the show at the Roes Theatre. That spring and summer in Athens, AnEn also embarked on its first foray into opera. They presented the first act of “The Turing Opera” with the experimental wing of the Greek National Opera. They are currently developing the second act and hope to premiere the finished piece in 2012.
